558 High St, Petersburg, VA – $699,950
5 Bed, 1.1 Bath, 3434 square feet. Known as The Beasley House, it was headquarters for Robert E. Lee during the Civil War, the cottage outback was used as his office. I thought this was interesting about the Siege of Petersburg. There is a virtual tour available, bigger pics! Aerial view available.
In the book “Civil War Petersburg” by A. Wilson Greene, it was said that “Colonel Walter Taylor selected the residence, the Beasley House, which was vacant at the time. ‘I took possession of a fine house-had his room nicely cleaned out and arranged, with a cheerful fire&c,’ wrote Taylor, but ‘it was entirely too pleasant for him, for he is never so uncomfortable as when comfortable.’ The general shifted quaters to a tent west of town for a short time before returning to the Beasley House.”
- “Headquarters of Gen. R. E. Lee, Nov. 1 To 25, 1864.”
- “Three blocks North and a half block West is the Beasley House where General Robert E. Lee had his second headquarters in 1864 during the Siege of Petersburg. He moved thence to Edge Hill to be in closer touch with his right wing.”
